Sunspot numbers & High Speed Streams (HSS)

Major sunspot numbers resulted in coronal holes. HSS often associated with coronal holes. The coronal holes can be traced by CHIMERA segmentation available on solar monitor website. The solar wind speed due to coronal holes from poles is approx. 500-800km/sec while from nearby equator ranges from 300-400km/sec. The combination of these winds is known as corotating interaction region (CIR). The combination of these winds gives compressions of slow speed winds (300-400km/s) due to high speed winds (HSS) (500-800km/s) and so we have the features like densed regions (higher density n), Larger Ap- index, negative Bz, increase in IMF (total B), moderate geomagnetic storm (-100nT <= dst<= -50nT), gradual increase in temperature and solar wind velocity tries to achieve 800km/sec but only achieves below 600km/s.
